Super Compliance: A Crucial Update for Small Businesses.

The Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) Association highlights the importance of aligning employees' super details with those recorded by the ATO following the latest enhancement to the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House (SBSCH).

The ATO has implemented a significant upgrade to the SBSCH, introducing SMSF bank account validation to bolster the precision and security of super contributions. This development affects all small employers utilising the SBSCH to manage super payments to their employees' SMSFs.

The validation process zeroes in on the BSB and account numbers registered under the SMSF's Superannuation Role within ATO systems. Any discrepancies in these details will result in the SBSCH withholding superannuation payments for affected employees.

With Superannuation Guarantee (SG) obligations for the March 2024 quarter due no later than 28 April 2024, it is imperative for small businesses to take proactive measures now. Employers utilising the SBSCH are urged to verify with their employees that the SMSF bank account designated for superannuation contributions matches the one registered with the ATO.

Anticipating a surge in enquiries from employees unsure about verifying their employer's super contribution bank accounts, the regulator emphasises the importance of effective communication.  Should an employee need to update their SMSF bank details with the ATO, it is vital to inform all fund members promptly.  The ATO will also issue email or text alerts to ensure everyone stays informed.

Small employers must act well in advance of the next SG contribution deadline on 28 April 2024, to avoid potential compliance issues. Delays in reviewing and updating employees' SMSF bank records may lead to SG shortfalls and penalties, with insufficient time to rectify discrepancies. Taking proactive steps now will mitigate such risks and ensure smooth compliance with superannuation obligations.

If you have any questions in relation to the new SMSF bank account validation in the ATO SBSCH for your employees or for your own SMSF and super contributions, please get in touch with us at the office.
